The Morning Claret

Simon J Woolf & Friends on Wild and Wonderful Wines

Day: 3 September 2019

Hirsch – Riesling Ried Gaisberg 2018

A very focused, if almost mono-thematic reading of this wonderful vineyard, with pear fruit and some lees character. The restrained ripeness level is appreciated, but there is a hint of bitterness on the finish which is distracting.

Ludwig Neumayer – Riesling Ried Rothenbart 2018

Attractive fruit expression, but a little on the flabby side – there is Riesling character in the tangy fruit, but a lack of drive and excitement. The finish is surprisingly vegetal for this young wine.

Markus Huber – Riesling Ried Rothenbart 2018

The acidity provides a lot of drive and excitement. Ripe citrus peel with fresh thyme and wild herbs. Satisfying, restrained but mouth filling – fairly short on the finish, but the expressive nose provides such a lot of pleasure.

Markus Huber – Riesling Ried Berg 2018

Delicate aromas of citrus zest and a hint of camphor. Feels ripe but with enough freshness to keep it balanced. Super youthful and fairly monothematic at this stage, but a nice elegant style.
