This piece was originally for paying subscribers only. It attracted a lot of attention and some complaints. I removed the paywall and also edited the headline and the opening paragraphs to be less sensationalist than the original version. This was in response to Jamie Goode’s suggestion that the piece was not balanced or fair to him.

I decided that the original text did not meet my own journalistic standards and thus it has been toned down a bit.
