Blaufränkisch Tasting Notes from Roka

My favourite wines from a standout tasting of this wonderful red variety

This post collects together the tasting notes from an event that I wrote about here.

Here are brief notes on some of the highlights and other points of interest, with my very approximate rating system of 1 star = excellent, 2 stars = brilliant.

SLOVENIA

Vino Greif - Modra Frankinja 2019 (Štajerska)

Fresh and fruity, attractively stalky. Simple but varietally correct.

*Sanctum Vinska Klet - Carthusian Red 2021 (Štajerska)

Owned by entrepreneur and sometime-worldclass-skier Marko Podkubovšek, the wines at this estate seem to be on the up in the last few years. Great structure, sappy, fresh acids and creamy tannins on the finish.

*Roka - Blaufränkisch 2015 (Štajerska)

I asked Liam why they don’t label this as Modra Frankinja. He said it’s easier to sell like this. Either way, it’s peppery, fresh and restrained, with plenty many years of ageing potential.
