“You want to spend how much?” asked my girlfriend incredulously, when I shared what I was planning to drink on Good Friday. It was the perfect storm. My favourite wine bar had just advertised a bottle from the Jura’s most sought-after label. A friend fanned the flames. The listed price was a fraction of what we found online. “It’s a bargain” we told each other.

The plan was to hit the venue, deploy our charm and negotiation skills and enjoy a little Easter treat. I wasn’t sure if I believed my own words. Were we seriously about to spank €475 on a single bottle?
