I was surprised to see that it’s possible to ripen Frankovka Modra to 14.5% in southern Slovakia, but I’m not sure why you’d want to. There’s some attractive black cherry aromas on the nose, but also a raisined note that shows telltale signs of overripeness at harvest. It’s pretty heavy on the extraction too, with a slightly overworked feel to the tannins. The fruit is crunchy and there is freshness (which surprised me). But overall it just feels a bit heavy, and lacking the charm that this variety grown in this part of the world ought to have. In my humble….
