Usakhelauri is a typical red grape from Lechkumi. This is the first one I’ve tried.
It has really superb acidity, and a leafy, almost geranium-like aroma. Blackcurrant leaf and berries carry the palate, with that spell binding acidity making the mouth water.
The grapes were crushed and destemmed, and then allowed to ferment in the sasknaseli (traditional wooden trough used in Georgia, a bit like the Portuguese lagar).
Additional props to this winery for being one of very few in Georgia who have organic certification.
