While I’m a long term fan of Uwe Schiefer’s wines, this 2017 Szapary feels like its lacking harmony right now. The tannins are woody and rather brutal – even 4 years in. And on the nose there’s a strange elderflower note that feels a little distracting.
This is a wine that has plenty of assets – good acidity, prodigious structure. But it hasn’t come together yet. Right now it’s a jumble of parts.
