This is the label from the famous Chateau Mere, one of Kakheti’s most famous boutique hotels. Sadly this wine feels a bit manipulated and commercial. If you want a good honest qvevri style, this is not it. The peachy, apricoty fruit aromas and flavours feel a bit confected and unnatural – as if cultured yeasts were used.
The fruit is on the sweet side, the acidity’s good but texture is a bit lacking – and the expression of the grape skins feels muted.
A wine that would provide plenty of fruit-focused enjoyment to undemanding drinkers who aren’t looking for a proper qvevri style. But for me it was a disappoinment. I’m also not a fan of the super-heavy bottle and the faux-Chateauneuf-de-Pape engraved cross.
